My Word is My Bond
These words should be your mantra—your living affirmation.
Ramadan is a time to transform words into embodied commitments. One of its
greatest rewards is not just spiritual growth, but the trust you build in your
own will. By overcoming its trials, you demonstrate that your word holds power.
You strengthen your ability to bridge intention and action.
Your word is your bond. A bond is a contract—not just with
others, but with yourself. What you say, you must do. The promises you make,
even privately, shape your will. Succeeding in Ramadan fortifies this internal
bond, proving that you can endure and honor your commitments. When future
challenges arise, you will look back and say: I have kept my word before,
and I can do it again.
But if you break your word, your will weakens. Doubt takes
root. And when hardships come, you may find yourself questioning your own
strength.
The Gift of Will and the Consequence of Its Neglect
Free will is a sacred gift from Allah—the power to act in
alignment with your essence. If you do not claim this gift consciously, someone
else will. And when that happens, you risk becoming like a Non-Playable
Character (NPC) in a game—following the will of others, repeating external
scripts, without agency of your own.
"And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to
the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They
said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds
blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, *'Indeed, I
know that which you do not know.'"
— Al-Baqarah (2:30)
Mankind was created as the khalīfah—the successor on earth,
shaped in His image—not in form, for nothing in creation can compare to His
Infinite Being, but in the capacity for will, reason, and choice. This makes us
a reflection of Him—a microcosm of the divine, distinct yet eternally connected.
"If one of you fights his brother, let him avoid
striking the face, for Allah created Adam in His image."
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2612
This divine spark within us—our will—was never meant for
passivity. It must be claimed, nurtured, and strengthened. Ramadan is not
merely a test of abstention, but an opportunity to reforge the inner covenant.
Each fast is a sharpening of will. Each moment of restraint is a declaration: My
word matters. My soul leads.
The Path Forward
Your word is more than a sound—it is a signal of intent, a
seed of action, a measure of truth. Let Ramadan teach you that you are not a
victim of impulse or environment. You are the successor of the earth, bearer of
sacred trust, endowed with free will. And your speech must echo your soul.
May this Ramadan be a source of inner mastery, and may your
word always remain your sacred bond.
